Classroom Proceedures
As in any classroom, there are proceedures in place in order to set students up for success. In our learning environment, there are several things your child must understand and agree to in order to be successful and college prepared.
Homework
Homework will be given on an AS NEEDED BASIS. All homework assignments will be posted on four places: the whiteboard, the class calendar, the class website, and outside the classroom door. It is your child's responsibility to write down and make note of all homework assignments and their due dates. All homework is due the day mentioned. Late and missing homework could severly impact student achievement and grades. Please check in with your child daily regarding homework.
Grading Policy
I use the DPS, middle school grading criteria, which can be broken down as follows:
4- Advanced (consistently performing ABOVE grade level)
3- Proficient (performing AT grade level)
2- Partially Proficient (SLIGHTLY BELOW grade level)
1- Beginning Understanding (SIGNIFICANTLY BELOW grade level)
Bathroom
All students are allowed to use the restroom during passing period, as well as during class time. However, a student may only use the restroom one time per class session during group work. Once they use their one time, they will be allowed to go during passing period. Students must sign out on the clip board and the white board, and take the clip board with them as their pass. If there is an emergency or medical condition, case by case determination will be used.
Guest Teachers
If I am ever out of the building for training or personal matters, students will have a guest teacher. That teacher will be treated as respectfully as any other adult in the building, as they are our guest. Whenever possible, I will update students and the website as to when I will be out for the day.
Nurse Visits
Students will be allowed to visit the nurse in extreme emergencies (severe bleeding, vomiting, major injuries, etc.). For minor injuries and discomforts, students will be assisted within the classroom. If your child has a medical condition that requires specific treatments, please contact the school nurse promptly.
Absences
It is vital for all successful, college ready learners to attend school daily. Any absences must be reported to the main office at 720-423-5460.
BIC- Breakfast in the Classroom
Starting on October 1st, students will be eating breakfast in the classroom with their first period teachers. They will have milk, one entree, and one side item. The fees are the same as if they were eating breakfast/lunch in the cafeteria. If you recieve free breakfast now, you will continue to recieve free breakfast.
School and Classroom Announcements
School and classroom announcements will be sent home with the student. They will also be posted on our class website.
Discipline
In our learning environment, I use Responsive Classroom techniques, along with Logical Consequences and Restorative Justice models. I focus on the needs of ALL learners. In the discipline process, both the student committing the disruption and those affected will take an active role in rectifying the situation. Disrupters are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and repair the "harm" they've done (apologizing, repairing, or school/ classroom community service, etc.). This method focuses on the personal needs of everyone in the learning environment. Much of the time, dialogue between the disrupter and those affected will be encouraged.
If the learning environment is severely disrupted, several steps will happen:
1. Conversation with the student and all affected will occur.
2. If problem persists, students will be asked to visit a buddy classroom, complete a THINK and RESOND sheet, and promptly return to class (after dialoguing with the teacher). Parents will be notified and face to face conference may be held.
3. Administration/ security will be called if the student becomes a danger to themselves or others. Parents will be notified and face to face conference will occur.
Fieldtrips/ School Performances
All learners at WLA are required to represent our school in the best and most appropriate way.
Digital Citizenship
Once to twice per week, students will be allowed to access the laptops and iPads. Students will be coached on how to responsibly use the internet and what it means to be a digital citizen. If students are found in violation of the digital citizenship rules outlined by the school policy, logical and appropriate consequences will ensue.
Uniform Policy
All students are required to wear a WLA shirt daily. Coats, sweaters, and jackets must be kept in lockers or worn UNDER the WLA shirt. No solid RED shirts, shoes, or pants will be allowed at any time. Shorts and skirts must go to the end of student fingertips when standing straight. Students must wear leggings or other appropriate attire under ripped jeans/pants. No hats allowed.
Food/ Drinks
Water and water bottles will be allowed in the classroom. However, so as to not encourage critters in the builcing, all food and snacks must remain in backpacks or in the lunch room (except for BIC).
